Nearly six years after the devastating East Gippsland Black Summer Bushfires, five dilapidated jetties at Mallacoota will finally be rebuilt.
State Member for Gippsland East, Tim Bull, said the announcement was “about time”.
“The jetties had some fire damage, but most had simply fallen into a state of disrepair and were promised to be rebuilt as part of the fire recovery.
“I was initially told work would start in October, but we again have a minor delay, and it is now likely to be closer to Christmas and the New Year,” said Mr Bull.
“The jetties at Allan Head, Cemetery Bight, The Narrows, Kingfisher Point and Cape Horn will all be renewed, bringing an end to years of community frustration and advocacy.
“The Nationals’ candidate for Gippsland East, Gemma Rendell, and I will be keeping a very close eye on these projects to make sure Mallacoota finally gets the infrastructure it has fought so hard for.”
“They should have been rebuilt years ago. It is an absolute disgrace that it has taken Labor this long to make good on its promise,” said Ms Rendell.
“These sites are more than just boating infrastructure, they play an important role in supporting Mallacoota’s tourism economy and community lifestyle.
“Fishing and boating are central to the town’s identity and economy. Having safe and accessible facilities that allow people to enjoy the natural splendour of these locations is critical, not only for tourism, but for creating memories with family and enjoying the great outdoors.”
Mr Bull acknowledged the persistence of local residents, community groups and stakeholders who continued to push for the works to be completed.
“The Mallacoota community never gave up on this issue. Their determination to keep this project on the agenda is the reason we have finally secured this outcome, and they deserve enormous credit for that.”
“After the November election, although I won’t be the Member, I’ll be taking the opportunity to visit each site and see the progress for myself,” Mr Bull said.
