A Nationals and Liberals Government will establish 10 new Technical Colleges across Victoria, giving 5,000 secondary students hands on training and pathways into in demand careers.
The plan will help tackle Victoria’s skills shortage while creating more opportunities for young people, with the first new Technical College announced to be in Gippsland.
As a former VCAL teacher, The Nationals’ Member for Eastern Victoria Melina Bath said she had seen firsthand that many students thrive when learning is practical, hands on and connected to real jobs.
“Not every student thrives in a traditional classroom, and not every young person wants to go to university,” Ms Bath said.
“Learning a trade can lead to a rewarding career, while giving young people the confidence and skills to succeed.
“Our plan will help thousands of students gain job ready skills at school and move into apprenticeships, training or employment sooner.”
Under the plan, students in Years 10 to 12 will undertake vocational education and training linked to industries facing workforce shortages, including construction, electrical trades, plumbing, healthcare and hospitality.
Ms Bath said the Nationals and Liberals were focused on preparing the next generation of skilled workers needed to build more homes, support local businesses and strengthen regional communities.
Each college will accommodate around 500 students and be co-located with existing secondary schools and TAFE campuses, making efficient use of established facilities.
Ms Bath said Victoria has a significant trade skills shortage, with demand continuing to grow as the state seeks to build more homes and deliver infrastructure.
“Bringing back Technical Colleges is about creating opportunities for young people and ensuring Victoria has the skilled workforce needed for the future,” Ms Bath said.
“I welcome the commitment for a Wonthaggi Technical College and will continue advocating for further opportunities across eastern Victoria so more local students can access these opportunities closer to home.
“Bringing back Technical Colleges is a positive plan to address skills shortages, grow our economy and help more young Victorians get into jobs sooner.”
