Broadford residents have been calling for a safer Main Street as the town continues to grow, with a $500,000 Liberal and Nationals commitment set to deliver a safety assessment and upgrades to the traffic signals.
The Nationals Member for Euroa Annabelle Cleeland announced the commitment on Tuesday, 20 October, saying the investment would help make it safer for drivers, pedestrians and families to move through the centre of town.
The announcement follows ongoing advocacy from the Broadford community, including the Broadford Residents Action Group, which has worked to raise concerns about Main Street safety and the need for improvements as traffic through the growing town increases.
Ms Cleeland said local residents deserved to be heard, and their concerns needed to translate into practical action.
“The people who live in Broadford know their town, they know how much it has grown, and they see firsthand the challenges that come with more traffic moving through Main Street,” Ms Cleeland said.
“The Broadford Residents Action Group and local residents have been raising these concerns because they want to see their town made safer for everyone.
“Community advocacy matters. When residents take the time to speak up, share their concerns and push for improvements, they deserve to know they are being listened to.
“Broadford is growing, and we need to make sure our roads and streets keep pace with that growth.
“Whether you’re driving through town, walking down Main Street or trying to cross the road with your children, you should be able to do so safely. Families shouldn’t have to feel like crossing the main street is a gamble.”
The $500,000 commitment will fund a safety assessment and upgrades to the traffic signals, helping identify and deliver improvements to Main Street.
Ms Cleeland said the investment was an important step towards addressing the concerns raised by the community and improving safety in the town centre.
“This is about taking the concerns residents have been raising and putting real investment behind them,” Ms Cleeland said.
“Broadford deserves a Main Street that works for the community today and into the future, not one that struggles to keep up as the town grows.
“Our commitment is backed by the Liberal and Nationals’ Fair Share Guarantee, which will help ensure regional communities receive a fairer share of infrastructure investment.
“Broadford residents have made their concerns clear. They deserve to see action that helps make their town safer.”
