The Nationals’ Member for Eastern Victoria, Melina Bath, has called on the Labor Government to explain why Gippsland rail commuters were again left stranded after train services ceased before the end of a major AFL final at the MCG.
Speaking in state parliament, Ms Bath said Gippslanders travelling home from the blockbuster football final on the weekend were let down by the Labor Government that continues to prioritise Melbourne infrastructure projects at the expense of regional passengers.
Buses replaced trains on the Gippsland line, forcing football fans to make their way across the city to Southern Cross Station because the Gippsland V/Line service stopped operating from 10PM.
“With just 30 minutes to reach the 11pm replacement bus after the final siren, passengers who missed the service were forced to wait until midnight to board the next bus, not reaching Traralgon until around 3am,” Ms Bath said.
“Gippsland rail users are rightly frustrated – after 12 years of delays, disruptions and cancellations, they deserve better.
“Regional passengers deserve a reliable train service that allows them to access healthcare, employment, education and major events without the constant service disruptions.
“Time and again, Gippsland passengers are paying the price for Labor’s mismanagement – regional Victorians should not be treated as second-class citizens on the public transport network.”
Ms Bath said The Nationals and Liberals would deliver practical improvements for Gippsland commuters through its’ commitment to additional V/Locity train sets and longer peak-period trains.
“We’re committed to delivering an extra 1,110 seats on Traralgon and Bairnsdale V/Line services through longer trains and additional rolling stock,” Ms Bath said.
“That means more seats, better services and a more accessible rail network for Gippsland passengers.
“Labor must acknowledge the burden Melbourne’s infrastructure projects have placed on Gippsland travellers and explain why regional passengers continue to bear the consequences.
“Gippslanders deserve a rail service they can rely on and a government that puts regional communities first and after 12 years of Labor, it is clear a fresh start is needed.”
