The Mirboo North community is still waiting for funding for a new stadium despite more than a decade of campaigning for the project.
The Nationals Member for Gippsland South, Danny O’Brien recently highlighted the issue in Parliament again, this time calling on the Minister for Education to back the local schools, sporting clubs and community groups that have spent years advocating for a rebuild of the facility.
“I have raised this issue repeatedly over many years and written to multiple ministers, but Mirboo North is still waiting for action,” Mr O’Brien said.
“The stadium is more than 50 years old and is the only indoor sporting facility in town.
“Unfortunately, the facility does not meet current sporting standards, lacks adequate run-off areas and the change rooms and toilets are well past their use-by date.
“In spite of this, it is heavily used by both schools as well as local basketball, the football netball club, yoga groups, martial arts clubs and other community organisations.
Mr O’Brien said the project remained a priority for the town and required support from the Minister for Education to move forward.
“I know the Minister for Community Sport understands the need for this project because she visited the site with me following the storms that impacted Mirboo North in 2024.
“Ultimately, we need the Minister for Education to get behind this project and ensure it progresses.
“The students, sporting clubs and wider community deserve a modern, safe facility that meets today’s standards.
“It is time for the Labor Government to get on board and deliver the funding needed to make it happen.”
