The Nationals in government will deliver an immediate $2 million food relief package in its first 100 days, helping put food on the tables of Victorian families struggling under Labor’s cost of living crisis.
After 12 years of Labor, Victorians are paying more for everything. Groceries, power bills, rent and mortgages have all gone up, leaving more families struggling to afford the basics.
Yesterday’s fifth interest rate rise this year, taking the official cash rate to 4.85 per cent, is another devastating blow for households already doing it tough.
Under the Nationals and Liberals’ Urgent Food Security Grant Program, $2 million will be made available to established food relief organisations, including Foodbank, to help meet growing demand and get food to Victorians who need it most.
Shadow Minister for Disability, Ageing, Carers and Volunteers, Jade Benham, said families across the state were being forced into making difficult decisions.
“No one should have to make between heating their homes and feeding their kids but that is the reality facing many Victorians,” Ms Benham said.
Community groups and volunteers on the front line were facing increased challenges keeping up.
“The pressure is being felt by not only those in need but the groups stretched to provide their help,” Ms Benham said.
“From neighbourhood houses to local food hubs, organisations throughout Victoria have been doing the heavy lifting, and this funding will help them keep their doors open and their shelves stocked.”
Leader of the Opposition Jess Wilson said no Victorian should have to worry about where their next meal is coming from.
“Putting food on the table shouldn’t be a struggle, but after 12 years of Labor, that’s the reality for too many Victorian families,” Ms Wilson said.
“Parents are skipping meals so their kids can eat, families are cutting back at the supermarket and people who have worked hard all their lives are now turning to charities just to get by.
“Food charities are doing extraordinary work, but they can’t keep up with growing demand without more support.
“That’s why a Nationals and Liberals Government I lead will provide $2 million in emergency food relief funding within our first 100 days.
“Only a Nationals and Liberals Government will give Victoria a fresh start by lowering costs, reducing taxes and making government work for the people it serves.”
