The Nationals have committed $180,000 towards the Bendigo Military
Museum’s “Expanding the Story” project, helping preserve and share the
stories of local veterans who served in Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan and
peacekeeping operations.
The Nationals Member for Northern Victoria, Gaelle Broad, said the funding
will help ensure the experiences of contemporary veterans are recognised
and remembered for generations to come.
“Bendigo has a proud military history and this project will help ensure the
stories of those who served Australia in more recent conflicts are preserved
and shared with the wider community,” Ms Broad said.
“The Bendigo Military Museum plays an important role in educating visitors
about the sacrifices made by servicemen and women, and this investment
will help strengthen that role for future generations.”
The Nationals Candidate for Bendigo West, David Hutchings said the
project would create a lasting legacy for local veterans and their families.
“The service and sacrifice of our contemporary veterans deserves to be
recognised alongside those who served in earlier conflicts,” Mr Hutchings
said.
“Many men and women from our region have served in Vietnam, Iraq,
Afghanistan and peacekeeping operations around the world. Their
experiences are an important part of our local story.”
“This funding will help create engaging new displays, record stories and
ensure these events are preserved for future generations.”
The project will refurbish the Museum’s historic Billiard Room Gallery and
create dedicated exhibition spaces focused on contemporary military
service. It will also improve accessibility and deliver modern interpretive
displays featuring personal stories, artefacts and digital content.
The Nationals Candidate for Bendigo East, Andrew Lethlean, said the
investment would provide significant benefits for the wider Bendigo
community.
“This is more than preserving military history. It’s about honouring service,
supporting veterans and helping younger generations understand the
contribution made by those who have worn our nation’s uniform,” Mr
Lethlean said.
“The Bendigo Military Museum is a fantastic community asset and this
project will strengthen its role as a place of learning, reflection and
remembrance.”
Ms Broad said the commitment reflected The Nationals’ support for
veterans and regional communities.
“Regional Victoria has a proud history of service to our nation and we want
to ensure those stories continue to be told. This funding will help the
museum deliver a first-class exhibition that honours the contribution of
contemporary veterans and their families.”
