The Nationals Member for Gippsland South, Danny O’Brien has slammed the Allan Labor Government’s rushed introduction of new compulsory acquisition powers for transmission line easements, warning that Gippsland landholders are now at risk.
“Gippslanders, including farmers, are being forced to shoulder yet another burden, with their property rights ignored and communities left powerless,” Mr O’Brien said.
New legislation gives powers to the government, transmission companies and distributors to compulsorily acquire farmland for easements while an Environmental Effects Statement (EES) is still underway.
Mr O’Brien said this is a move that puts taxpayers at risk, erodes trust and threatens the livelihoods of local farmers.
“This amendment to the law is a slap in the face to regional people and says the Labor Government is really not interested in your views or your rights.
“It is frustrating and deeply concerning that the government thinks it can seize land before proper environmental or planning approvals are even in place.
“I know from talking to locals right across Gippsland just how stressful it is for landholders to face uncertainty over their property, farms and businesses.
“Labor’s rushed new law completely disrespects landowners and farmers, with no regard for good planning, consultation or fairness.
“Farmers are doing it tough and Labor’s actions are making it worse.”
Mr O’Brien reiterated The Nationals’ commitment to regional Victoria.
“Labor simply cannot be allowed to continue to bulldoze through our communities.
“The Nationals and Liberals strongly opposed this amendment, rushed in at the last minute, and in government we will repeal these laws, restore proper consultation and put the rights of farmers and landowners back where they belong.”
