Chaos has ensued on the West Gate Freeway this morning with motorists wasting hours idling due to more mismanagement from the State Labor Government.
It is understood that a disagreement between WorkSafe and CFMEU officials over West Gate Tunnel safety certificates has caused equipment to be left on the freeway, leaving morning peak hour commuters negotiating one inbound lane.
Shadow Minister for Roads Steph Ryan said the delays were unacceptable and avoidable but completely true to form.
“This is more of the same from Minister for Excuses Jacinta Allan, further highlighting her inability to manage any sort of major project,” Ms Ryan said.
“Traffic was backed up 20km by the start of the morning peak.
“Amateur hour is a gross understatement of this morning’s chaos.
“It beggars belief that a disagreement over safety certificates is disrupting commutes more than four years after construction works began.”
Ms Ryan said accountability over West Gate Tunnel projects has been almost non-existent.
“Jacinta Allan should be front and centre this morning apologising to commuters and explaining why this has happened, but she is nowhere to be seen,” Ms Ryan said.
“The Premier didn’t fare much better when he labelled his Labor Government’s road chaos as nothing more than an “inconvenience”.
“I wonder whether this inconvenience is just a reference to causing commuters to again be reduced to a crawl in peak hour traffic or if it extends to Labor’s multi-billion-dollar cost blowouts and the delayed 2025 completion date?
“This is so true to form, and Melburnians have every right to be fed up with government mismanagement of metro infrastructure projects.
“At a time when Victoria should be recovering and rebuilding the Andrews Labor Government’s gross incompetence is causing us to stall.”
