The passage of the Firearms and Control of Weapons (Machetes) Amendment Bill through the Legislative Assembly has been described as a ‘missed opportunity’ by Nationals Member for Ovens Valley, Tim McCurdy.
Speaking in Parliament recently, Mr McCurdy decried the crocodile tears from Labor about the need for safer communities.
“Can I say to those on the other side who spoke on this bill that they missed an opportunity.
“There is a chance to actually make Victoria safer, and you have chosen to sit on your hands and do nothing.
“You have just read the government notes rather than standing up for your communities and letting them see that you really do support them.
“Nearly every member has talked about violence in their electorate with knives and machetes, but still you read the government notes.
“You had a chance. You had an opportunity to do something about it today, and you did not.”
Speaking further, Mr McCurdy said that it was clear the Allan Labor Government was not serious about tackling crime in the community.
“Labor likes to cry about these issues but do nothing when they have the chance to do something about it.
“Victorians will be no safer after this legislation passes through Parliament than they were before.
“Do not be fooled – Jacinta Allan and Labor are soft on crime and always will be.”
