Labor has again disgracefully voted again to block scrutiny of what is the largest integrity scandal in Victoria’s history.
Legislation put forward by the Liberals and Nationals to give Victoria’s chief anti-corruption agency vital follow the money powers passed the Legislative Council with the support of all political parties expect Labor who voted against it.
When it was referred to the Assembly, the Allan Labor Government used its numbers to vote it down and continue its protection of at least $15 billion in questionable spending from investigation.
The Nationals’ Member for Eastern Victoria, Melina Bath said Labor’s determination to shield itself from accountability “knows no bounds”.
“When faced with a simple choice to comply with Legislative Council orders and allow proper investigation into rorted public funds on major projects, Labor chose to shut it down,” Ms Bath said.
“This $15 billion scandal is effectively a $5,000 tax on every Victorian household, despite this, Labor still refuses to back transparency and introduce follow the money powers.”
Ms Bath said Victorians deserve an anti‑corruption agency with the power to investigate improper conduct involving taxpayer money and to hold public hearings.
“Labor’s refusal to strengthen corruption powers highlights its ongoing governance failures, and voting against this legislation is a serious breach of integrity, accountability and public trust.
“Victoria urgently needs transparency and an end to the rorting that has flourished under Labor’s watch.”
