The Allan Government must act urgently to secure fuel supplies for eastern Victoria.
The Nationals’ Melina Bath, said regional Victorians continue to pay far more for fuel than people inside the tram tracks, but unlike city residents, eastern Victorians have limited public transport.
“Our farmers are struggling to secure the fuel needed to sow crops, harvest produce and care for their livestock,” Ms Bath said.
“A reliable fuel supply keeps food on our tables and ensures produce can be transported to supermarkets.”
Ms Bath warned that fuel shortages and soaring prices would have immediate consequences for everyone.
“Higher fuel costs increase the cost of producing food and fibre, driving up the cost of living for every Victorian family.
“Victorians deserve to know exactly what stance the Allan Government is taking to secure our fair share of fuel.”
Ms Bath said Premier Allan must be transparent about what action she is taking to resolve distribution issues and protect regional supply.
“Labor’s response to date has been dismissive, even after some local petrol stations ran dry over the past days.
“While New South Wales is prioritising fuel for agriculture and freight, the Allan Government is downplaying the seriousness of the situation.
“Victoria is home to Australia’s largest agriculture and food processing workforce, but without fuel, every household will feel the impact.”
Ms Bath said The Nationals backed the Victorian Farmers Federation’s call for city commuters to take public transport to help conserve fuel for critical industries.
“The consequences of Labor’s inaction are food prices are rising higher – a disaster for families already struggling to keep the lights on and keep food on the table.”
