The Nationals Member for Eastern Victoria Region, Melina Bath says today’s energy from waste announcement for Latrobe Valley’s Maryvale Mill is a much-needed boost which is great for jobs and the environment.
The Nationals Federal Member for Gippsland, Darren Chester, has today announced an investment of $48.2 million for Opal’s Maryvale Mill to establish the Energy from Waste (EfW) project.
“The EfW project at Maryvale Mill will help transition Latrobe Valley as we invest in new industries and commit to a lower emission future, said Ms Bath.
“Congratulations must be given to the consortium, Opal, Veolia and Masdar Tribe Australia for their commitment to Latrobe Valley and backing this exciting project that turns household waste that would otherwise go to landfill, into useable energy.
“Special acknowledgment and credit to David Jettner who has led Maryvale Mill’s EfW project from the beginning and my federal colleague, Darren Chester for being a local champion and securing this ground breaking investment.”
Ms Bath said The Nationals are committed to growing local ongoing jobs through expanding the footprint of successful enterprises as well as investing in new technologies.
“A venture I have backed for years, the EfW project establishes the Maryvale Mill as a leader in Australia’s circular economy, securing its place as the largest private employer in our region well into the future.
“Gippsland manufacturers are world class, and it is wonderful to see public and private investment to build jobs, invest in innovation and develop expertise in Latrobe Valley.
“At a time when a sustainable industry like the native timber industry is under attack from the Andrews Government’s, it is fantastic to see the Federal Government backing local manufacturing and securing jobs now and into the future.”
