The Nationals’ Member for Mildura, Jade Benham, has questioned the Minister for Carers and Volunteers Luba Grigorovitch over funding for Neighbourhood Houses during the 2026/27 PAEC Budget Hearings, with the Minister repeatedly declining to confirm whether funding would be increased.
Ms Benham referred to the Department Performance Statement, which showed funded coordination hours for Neighbourhood Houses remained unchanged, despite mounting pressure on the sector and reports that some houses are at risk of closure.
During questioning, the Minister acknowledged Neighbourhood Houses were doing “God’s work” but did not commit to increasing funding, instead pointing to the existing $43 million annual investment and broader program activity.
Ms Benham said Neighbourhood Houses in regional areas, including across the Mildura electorate, were already delivering services beyond their funded capacity and were under increasing strain.
“They can’t do it on goodwill alone,” Ms Benham said.
Around 20 Neighbourhood Houses across Victoria are currently unfunded, with others facing growing cost pressures and rising community demand.
The Minister pointed to indexation settings and existing program funding arrangements affecting funding but did not confirm any additional funding increases for the sector.
Ms Benham said Neighbourhood Houses were a critical part of local communities, particularly in regional Victoria, but they are being pushed to the limit.
“They are desperate for more funding and more hours, but the Allan Labor Government will not commit to increase financial support.
“Regional Victorians can’t afford to lose their Neighbourhood Houses. Labor must guarantee their future and make sure these centres continue to operate for the people who rely on them.”
