Letter to the Editor – Otis Foundation celebrates 25 years
Dear Editor,
I write to congratulate the Otis Foundation on celebrating 25 years of caring for people with breast cancer.
The foundation started around a kitchen table in Bendigo. It is the legacy of Judy Burley, a young woman who was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 29 and lived with it for seven years until her passing at 36 years of age.
Judy and her husband Andrew Barling built their dream home in Mandurang near Bendigo. The benefits of the beautiful environment and feelings of peace and comfort motivated Judy to want to offer similar experiences to others facing the same health challenges.
The Otis Foundation was created after her death in 2000. Named after her dog Otis, it began with two villas.
The foundation has now grown to a national not-for-profit, providing the gift of time away to help those with breast cancer rest, reconnect and heal.
Over the last 25 years, Otis has provided over 30,000 nights of accommodation at donated properties across Australia.
I commend the founder Andrew Barling, chair Anne Baker, CEO Claire Culley and the many volunteers, supporters and staff on 25 years of extraordinary compassion and service.
Congratulations to everyone who has contributed to this remarkable milestone.
