Neighbourhood Houses are the quiet achievers of our communities, providing practical help, connection and support to thousands of Victorians every week.
Deputy Leader of The Nationals and Member for Lowan Emma Kealy has recognised the extraordinary contribution of Neighbourhood Houses and called for funding that reflects the important work they do.
“Our Neighbourhood Houses are run by remarkable people who know their communities, know when someone is struggling and know how to bring people together,” Ms Kealy said.
“From Nhill to Stawell, Rainbow to Hamilton and many places in between, our amazing Neighbourhood House teams provide food relief, training and education, social connection, help people navigate services, support families and older Victorians, and create a welcoming place for people who might otherwise be isolated.
“In our smaller country communities, that role is particularly important. Neighbourhood Houses are often doing the work that would otherwise fall through the gaps.”
Ms Kealy said the contribution of staff and volunteers deserved greater recognition and sustainable government support.
“They achieve an enormous amount with limited resources, backed by dedicated staff, volunteers and local communities who continually step up to help others,” Ms Kealy said.
“But goodwill only goes so far. Rising costs and growing demand mean Neighbourhood Houses need funding that keeps pace with the work they are being asked to do.
“The Labor government needs to recognise their value and make sure these important community organisations have the resources and certainty they need to keep their doors open.
“The Nationals value the people who keep our country communities strong. We’ll keep fighting for Neighbourhood Houses and the fair share of funding regional Victorians deserve.”
