The Nationals’ commitment to invest $45 million to redevelop Hamilton Base Hospital’s emergency department will deliver a safer, modern environment for patients and the health workers who care for them.
Member for Lowan and Deputy Leader of The Nationals Emma Kealy said new figures showing almost 24,000 violent incidents were recorded across Victorian public hospitals last year reinforced the need for safe, fit-for-purpose emergency departments.
“No nurse, doctor, paramedic or hospital worker should accept being punched, kicked, threatened or spat on as part of going to work,” Ms Kealy said.
“Our health workers care for us when we are at our most vulnerable. They deserve a workplace that helps keep them safe.”
Figures show violent incidents across Victorian hospitals increased 21 per cent in a year, and were 44 per cent higher than in 2022-23.
Ms Kealy said ageing infrastructure could make already difficult environments harder for staff, particularly when emergency departments were busy or patients were distressed.
“That’s why The Nationals have committed $45 million to redevelop Hamilton Base Hospital’s emergency department,” Ms Kealy said.
“Hamilton deserves a modern ED with better patient flow, appropriate treatment spaces and a safer working environment for staff.
“Labor has had decades to deliver the hospital infrastructure Hamilton needs, while our local doctors, nurses and health professionals continue caring for patients in facilities desperately needing an upgrade.
“Regional hospitals are already competing to attract and retain health workers. Modern facilities and safer workplaces are part of making sure they stay.
“The Nationals have a positive plan to rebuild regional Victoria, backed by The Nationals’ Fair Share Guarantee to ensure regional communities receive their fair share of government infrastructure investment.
“We know that 25 per cent of Victorians live in regional Victoria, so it’s only fair we receive 25 per cent of new infrastructure funding.
“Our $45 million Hamilton ED redevelopment is part of that commitment – better healthcare, better facilities and a fair share for our region.”
