The Nationals and Liberals in government will rebuild the sports stadium at Mirboo North schools, delivering a modern facility for students, sporting clubs and community groups.
The Nationals Member for Gippsland South and Leader of The Nationals, Danny O’Brien was joined by Shadow Minister for Education, Brad Rowswell to announce the commitment, following more than a decade of campaigning by the Mirboo North community.
“The stadium is more than 50 years old and is the only indoor sporting facility in town,” Mr O’Brien said.
“It is heavily used by both primary and secondary schools, local basketball, the football netball club, yoga groups, martial arts clubs and other community organisations.
“Unfortunately, it does not meet current sporting standards, lacks adequate run-off areas and has change rooms and toilets that are well past their use-by date.
“A Nationals and Liberals Government will commit $3.5 million to rebuild the stadium and give our students and community the safe, modern facility they deserve.”
Mr Rowswell said the commitment would support local schools while recognising the stadium’s wider community role.
“Students in Mirboo North deserve access to modern sporting facilities that support physical education, school sport and opportunities to stay active.
“This investment will deliver a better facility for students and teachers, while also supporting the many local clubs and community groups that share it.”
Mr O’Brien said he had repeatedly raised the need for a rebuild in Parliament and written to successive ministers seeking support.
“Our community has made the case for this project over many years, but Labor has failed to deliver the funding needed for a rebuild,” Mr O’Brien said.
“I thank the schools, sporting clubs and community advocates who have kept this project on the agenda. The Nationals and Liberals are committed to delivering for Mirboo North.”
