The Nationals Member for Gippsland South, Danny O’Brien says visitors to Wilsons Promontory will be pleased to see the Sealers Cove boardwalk back open ahead of the September school holidays.
The popular walking route was severely damaged during storms and flooding in October 2021 and has been closed for almost five years.
Mr O’Brien said the reopening would be particularly welcome for walkers and campers who have had to use the much longer 26-kilometre detour to reach Sealers Cove.
“Sealers Cove is one of the most iconic walks at Wilsons Promontory and many people have been waiting a long time to see it reopened,” Mr O’Brien said.
“The boardwalk was damaged in the October 2021 storms and visitors have been without access to the direct route ever since.
“We were originally told the repairs would be completed in 2024, then that was pushed back to 2025 and eventually into 2026.
“While it has taken far too long, it is good to finally see walkers able to access Sealers Cove again.”
Mr O’Brien said the reopening will be a boost for visitors and the local tourism industry.
“Wilsons Promontory is one of Victoria’s premier tourism destinations and a major drawcard for South Gippsland.
“Local tourism operators benefit from people coming to the Prom, so having this popular walk open again is good news for visitors and businesses alike.
“I have been raising the delays with the Government for years because this is an important part of the Prom’s visitor experience.
“It is great to see people will be able to enjoy this spectacular part of Wilsons Promontory again over the school holidays.”
