The Labor Party have changed their mind so many times on funding for the Melbourne Airport Rail Link, it is impossible to take them seriously.
After months of squabbling between the Victorian Allan Labor Government and the Albanese Federal Labor Government, they have finally landed on a position.
The only party that has consistently supported the construction of a rail link from Melbourne city to Tullamarine Airport, is the Coalition – Federal and State.
The Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan has repeatedly claimed that the $4 billion Sunshine Station upgrade has to be done first which would not be completed before 2030, further debunking the Prime Minister’s assertions that this project will get underway within the decade.
And now the Prime Minister has thrown in $1.2 billion to fix congested roads ignored by Labor for a generation, in a desperate reaction to Labor’s Werribee by-election shock.
This Labor Prime Minister has already shown he cannot be trusted on big spending infrastructure promises.
The Prime Minister’s first big promise of 2025 was $7.2 billion for the Bruce Highway in Queensland.
It turns out in fact only $430 million will be spent over the next three years in evidence given by Infrastructure Department officials at Senate Estimates this week.
Now, weeks away from an election, the PM is making big promises of $8.2 billion for airport rail, train stations and roads in Melbourne’s suburbs.
But he won’t say how long Melbourne communities will have to wait for the funding to hit the ground, or how much will be delivered over the next three years.
If this new announcement is like the Bruce Highway, the vast majority of money will be after 2030.
