The announcement that the Latrobe Valley will host shooting and parashooting at the 2026 Commonwealth Games is a win for local sporting shooters.
The Nationals Member for Eastern Victorian, Melina Bath said the Latrobe Valley recreational shooting organisations must be congratulated for their strong advocacy in bringing the popular sport to the region.
“Recreational hunting and sporting shooting is a very popular pastime in the Valley.
“While clay target shooting takes skill, it’s also an accessible and inclusive sport, able to be enjoyed by all.
“Latrobe Valley has a passionate sporting shooting fraternity – hosting shooting events for the Commonwealth Games is testament to hard work club members have put in over many years.”
New facilities will need to be developed in Latrobe Valley to bring the local clubs up to international standard as part of the Commonwealth Games announcement.
The Nationals candidate for Morwell, Martin Cameron said after speaking with local sporting shooting groups it was vitally important to get the design of the facilities right.
“Latrobe Valley deserves a shooting facility that enables co-operation across all the sporting shooting clubs located in Moe, Morwell and Traralgon.
“Over the past couple of months, I have met with local sporting shooting clubs to discuss their priorities and the future of their sport – a key theme has been the lack of funding, and ensuring a secure future for each club.
“In government, I will work hard to deliver the community the best outcome for our region by supporting our sporting shooting clubs at the grassroots level.”
