The release of the 2026 Size and Scope of the Victorian Racing Industry report has confirmed what racing communities across Victoria have always known, racing is a cornerstone of our economy, our regional communities and our way of life.
With a $5.54 billion contribution to the Victorian economy, more than 33,000 full-time equivalent jobs and almost half of its economic impact generated in regional Victoria, thoroughbred, harness and greyhound racing continues to support local businesses, volunteers, clubs and thousands of Victorian families.
Shadow Minister for Racing Tim McCurdy said the Allan Labor Government had taken a year-to-year approach to an industry that was in need of long-term certainty and strategic planning.
“A future Liberal and Nationals Government will work alongside the thoroughbred, harness and greyhound racing codes to ensure Victoria remains the home of Australia’s premier racing events for the next decade and beyond,” Mr McCurdy said.
“Our focus will be on providing certainty, encouraging investment, strengthening regional racing and ensuring all three codes have the confidence to plan for the future.”
“Racing isn’t just about what happens on the track. It’s an economic powerhouse that supports jobs, tourism, agriculture, hospitality and communities right across Victoria,” Mr McCurdy said.
Mr McCurdy said that while Victoria was a renowned racing state, it faces stiff competition from around Australia and needed more government support.
“Victoria has long been Australia’s racing capital, but other states are investing heavily to attract our major events, participants and investment. We cannot afford to be complacent,” he said.
“An industry that contributes more than $5.5 billion to Victoria’s economy deserves a government with a vision that extends well beyond the next budget.”
