The Liberals and Nationals will commit $72 million to continue the Victorian Racing Industry Fund (VRIF), providing certainty for racing clubs, participants and communities across Victoria.
The Nationals’ Member for Ovens Valley and Shadow Minister for Racing, Tim McCurdy, said the commitment demonstrated the Coalition’s strong support for Victoria’s racing industry and its long-term future.
“Racing is part of Victoria’s DNA. It supports thousands of jobs, drives regional economies and brings communities together, from our major metropolitan racecourses to country racing clubs,” Mr McCurdy said.
“The industry contributes $5.5 billion to Victoria’s economy and supports around 33,450 full-time equivalent jobs. It is an important part of our state’s economy, sporting culture and regional communities.
Making the announcement at Wednesday’s Bendigo Cup, Mr McCurdy said the funding would be crucial to a sustainable Victorian racing industry.
“An elected Liberals and Nationals Government will ensure racing clubs have the funding certainty they need to plan ahead, invest in essential infrastructure and maintain the highest standards of safety and animal welfare,” Mr McCurdy said.
“Racing clubs make a significant contribution to their communities, and we want to see them continue to thrive. This commitment recognises the importance of supporting the people, clubs and volunteers who keep our racing industry moving.”
The $72 million commitment will maintain funding for vital capital works across all three racing codes, helping clubs meet safety and compliance requirements while providing greater certainty for future planning.
VRIF grants will continue to require dollar-for-dollar contributions from recipient clubs, leveraging industry investment and ensuring taxpayer funding delivers tangible benefits.
“An elected Liberals and Nationals Government will stand firmly behind Victorian racing, backing local clubs, protecting regional jobs and supporting an industry that delivers so much for our state,” Mr McCurdy said.
“From track upgrades and jockey facilities to improvements at regional racing venues, this commitment will help all three codes, thoroughbred, harness and greyhound racing remain safe, competitive and sustainable.”
