The Public Records Advisory Council is here to stay after the Liberals and Nationals successfully moved and passed amendments to the Estate Agents, Residential Tenancies and Other Acts Amendment (Funding) Bill 2024 in Parliament.
It kills off a shameful attempt by the Allan Labor Government to remove more oversight bodies without providing any detail on a replacement shows a continued level of disdain towards Government integrity and oversight bodies.
Shadow Minister for Consumer Affairs, Tim McCurdy, was relieved to see the PRAC remain in place.
“It is clear that Labor knew what they were trying to do was wrong and accepted that our amendments were sensible and reasonable,” Mr McCurdy said.
“Victorians deserve to know the details when it comes to abolishing bodies like this, not the wishy washy ‘we will tell you later’ that we get.”
“The PRAC plays an important role in ensuring the proper keeping of government documents for IBAC, VAGO, and Parliament, and we must keep it that way.”
Member for Southern Metropolitan Region, David Davis, who moved the amendment, said it marked a big win for transparency.
“Labor’s attempt to allow open season on document destruction has been stopped,” Mr Davis said.
“We are pleased Labor accepted the Liberals and Nationals amendments.
“Our public records will now continue to be handled in a careful and respectable way.
“Only the Liberals and Nationals will deliver integrity in Government.”
