Mount Arapiles climbers rallied at State Parliament calling on Premier Jacinta Allan to end what they say is an outrageous restriction to public land access.
The climbers launched a petition rejecting the Allan Labor Government’s plan to ban rock climbing at the world-renowned Mount Arapiles.
The move follows comments from Premier Allan claiming she supports Victorian’s ability to “enjoy the great outdoors,” sparking frustration from climbers and the local community who feel the government’s actions contradict its words.
Deputy Leader of The Nationals, Emma Kealy, slammed the Allan Labor Government’s decision, labelling it as outrageous.
Ms Kealy highlighted Premier Allan’s public comments do not align with government’s policy as it was revealed Parks Victoria is set to deploy officers to enforce the rock-climbing ban.
“Premier Allan has again been caught out saying one thing, while doing another. This decision is reckless and all without any genuine community engagement.” Ms Kealy said.
“This ban, coupled with patrolling staff, transforms a celebrated outdoor space into a monitored area, stripping away the very freedom that draws climbers and tourists to the region.”
Leader of The Nationals, Peter Walsh, highlighted the need for common-sense management that preserves heritage without restricting outdoor activities.
“We want solutions that consider the environment, heritage, and community – without banning recreation, damaging tourism, or hurting the local economy.
“We must strike a balanced approach that ensures the preservation of cultural heritage in conjunction with recreational use,” Mr Walsh stated.
The Liberals and Nationals are committed to working with local communities to find balanced approaches that protect both cultural heritage and public access.
The petition urges the Allan government to halt rock-climbing closures at Mount Arapiles until transparent, expanded consultations occur with affected communities and stakeholders.
Labor can’t manage state parks and Victorians are paying the price.
