The 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland are a reminder of the lost opportunity for regional Victoria at the hands of Labor.
Paid for by Victorian taxpayers, they will run from 23 July to 2 August 2026.
The Nationals’ Member for Eastern Victoria, Melina Bath said residents remain highly disappointed Gippsland has been deprived of the promised economic benefits that would have flowed from the international sporting event.
“The Commonwealth Games debacle is an absolute blight on the current Premier’s record, and it’s painfully ironic that Jacinta Allan was the former Minister for Commonwealth Games Delivery.
“The 2026 Regional Victoria Commonwealth Games deception will forever be known as the ‘Con Games’ after Labor cruelly pulled the rug out from under our communities.”
Ms Bath said businesses, residents, school children, community groups and sporting organisations were all promised a regional showcase to the world but were left with a $569 million burden.
“When athletes compete in Glasgow, many regional Victorians will be reflecting on the lost opportunity and what should have been.
“Our community and local businesses invested significant time, money and effort preparing to host the Games, it is understandable that residents remain resentful of Labor and Premier Jacinta Allan.”
