The passing of David Packham OAM marks the loss of a remarkable Australian whose pioneering work in bushfire science helped save lives, protect communities and shape land management across the nation.
David devoted his life to understanding fire and its place in the Australian landscape. His research into bushfire behaviour, prescribed burning, aerial ignition and active land management helped inform practices that continue to protect Australians today.
I was privileged to learn from David over many years. He generously shared his deep understanding of fire science and land management, always with patience, good humour and a genuine desire to help others learn.
While his scientific achievements were extraordinary, those who knew David will remember a true gentleman – humble, fiercely intelligent and generous with his time and expertise.
His legacy lives on through the work of firefighters, foresters, scientists, land managers and communities across Australia. Countless people are safer today because of the knowledge he worked so hard to advance.
My thoughts are with his family, especially his beloved wife, Helen, whose support and companionship were a constant throughout David’s life.
Vale David Packham. Australia is safer because of your life’s work.
