A new policy announced by The Nationals and Liberal will help return Victoria to its position as the Education State following declining literacy and numeracy outcomes.
The Nationals’ Member for Eastern Victoria Region, Melina Bath said the plan would strengthen educational foundations and give teachers the support they need to deliver better outcomes for students.
“Our Literacy and Numeracy Guarantee will strengthen the fundamentals of education and help students achieve their full potential, setting them up for future success.
“It expands professional learning opportunities for teachers and includes targeted programs in explicit teaching and classroom behaviour management.
“It will also include a review of Victoria’s curriculum to better prepare students for life while addressing rising workload pressures on our teachers.
“Our policy builds on recommendations from the Parliamentary Inquiry into Victoria’s public school education, which Ms Bath established in 2024.”
The Education Inquiry reported that almost 30 per cent of Victorian public school students were failing to meet basic literacy and numeracy standards and recommended the introduction of short and long-term targets to improve student learning outcomes.
Ms Bath said the Inquiry found Victoria’s state education system was operating under increasing pressure due to teacher shortages and the ever growing administrative demands.
“The Victorian Teaching and Learning Model needed updating to improve clarity and usability and help address declining student outcomes, yet Labor has failed to act.
“It is widely accepted our hardworking teachers are overworked and experiencing burnout.
“Too many Victorian students are slipping through the cracks and this trend must be reversed.
“The Nationals and Liberal policy will help reverse declining educational outcomes and importantly improve support for teachers and students.”
