Victorian Greens MP betrays childhood home on water buybacks
The Greens’ Ellen Sandell has turned her back on the Mildura community she grew up in by calling for more water buybacks from the Murray Darling Basin.
The Albanese Labor Government’s plan to strip 450GL of water from being available to communities for environmental purposes will devastate communities across regional Victoria.
Ms Sandell used the final day of Parliament for 2023 to support that devastation, asking the Premier in Question Time to fall into line with Albanese’s disastrous plan.
This move proves that Ms Sandell and the Greens are morally bankrupt, valuing a flimsy plan to flush vital water into artificial lakes in South Australia over the future of the hardworking people of Mildura.
Shadow Minister for Water, Tim McCurdy, said: “The Greens’ Member for Melbourne has completely betrayed her childhood home by calling for the Albanese Labor Government’s disastrous buybacks.”
“These buybacks are a tipping point that will devastate industries and entire communities in northern Victoria,” Mr McCurdy said.
“The Greens Member for Melbourne has again shown her lack of understanding of the balance that can exist between the environment and the communities that rely on our water – we can, and must, have both.”
The Nationals Member for Mildura, Jade Benham, said: “The legacy these inner-city MPs will leave if they keep ignoring the voices of Basin communities is one of devastation.”
“The Greens clearly forget the inner city would be hungry, naked and sober without hardworking communities like Mildura,” Ms Benham said.
