ictoria’s Neighbourhood Houses will receive a $10 million funding boost under a Liberal and Nationals Government, strengthening local community hubs that provide practical support and connection to Victorians doing it tough.
Neighbourhood Houses are at the heart of communities across Victoria, providing a place where people can access meals, food relief, clothing, social activities, education, volunteering and support, often delivered by dedicated volunteers who know their local community.
This rolling commitment over four years will extend to Neighbourhood Houses that currently receive no state funding, while providing additional and recurring funding to support existing neighbourhood houses across Victoria.
A new $6 million growth fund will be established to help Neighbourhood Houses establish or grow in some of Victoria’s fastest growing areas.
Shadow Minister for Carers and Volunteers, Jade Benham, said Neighbourhood Houses already provided essential support and education to so many Victorians and that this pledge would ease the funding burden so they can continue to do this amazing work.
“Neighbourhood Houses are trusted, local places where Victorians can turn when they need a helping hand, a meal, support or simply somewhere to connect with their community and learn,” Ms Benham said.
“Too many Victorians are doing it tough, and Neighbourhood Houses are often the first place people turn to for practical support.
“Our investment will make sure Neighbourhood Houses can keep their doors open, meaning more communities can access these important services.
“These organisations achieve so much with limited resources, powered by people who volunteer their time because they care about their community.
“They deserve a government that recognises their value and gives them the support to continue making a difference.”
“After 12 years of Labor, too many Neighbourhood Houses have had to close their doors, while others are being asked to do more with less,” Ms Benham said.
“While the Labor Government has sat on its hands, these community organisations have continued to step up and support Victorians.
“A Liberals and Nationals Government will back them with the investment they need to keep their doors open and their communities connected.”
