The Liberals and Nationals are calling on the Carroll Labor Government to urgently fix Victoria’s most dangerous potholes after a 71-year-old Ballarat man died after hitting a pothole on stretch of the Western Highway near Trawalla Road yesterday.
Victorian police responded to reports a motorcyclist struck a pothole and lost control on the dangerous stretch of Western Highway just before 12.50pm on Sunday. He died at the scene. The exact circumstances are yet to be determined and are under investigation.
The stretch of road had previously been identified by the government as in need of repair, and marked as having works completed.
Shadow Minister for Roads and Road Safety, Danny O’Brien, lent his condolences to the family of the deceased following the avoidable death.
“This is a terrible tragedy and my heart goes out to the deceased and his family. This is the saddest possible consequence to have come from the terrible state of Victorian roads and it should never have come to this,” Mr O’Brien said.
“These potholes need to be fixed and fixed properly as a matter of urgency. It is time for action and this needs to be the highest priority now so that no more lives are lost on Victorian roads because of government neglect.”
Mr O’Brien said the Liberals and Nationals would continue to press the government to bring forward road maintenance works for regional Victoria’s most dangerous roads.
The Liberals and Nationals have pledged that if elected to government, they will spend $5 billion over four years to properly maintain Victoria’s roads and fix a million potholes.
