To every Year 12 student sitting final exams across our region: good luck. You’ve worked hard to get here, and you should be proud of that effort whatever the results say.
Eighteen years ago I was in your shoes. Since then I’ve been a journalist, an editor, a farmer, a mum and now an MP, and almost none of it went to plan. Here’s what I wish someone had told me.
Your results don’t define you. A mark on a page can’t measure your character, your work ethic or how you treat people. Those will carry you further than any score.
There’s no single path. University, an apprenticeship, a job, travel or time to work it out are all good options. Stop comparing yourself to others and find what you’re good at.
Look beyond yourself. Our communities are strongest when people pitch in. Everyone has something to offer.
Don’t fear failure. Some of life’s best lessons come from getting it wrong and having another go.
Class of 2026, the finish line is close. I can’t wait to see what you do next.
