Shadow Minister for Water, Tim McCurdy, has called on the Andrews Government to push hard for an extension to the Murray Darling Basin Plan 2024 deadline.
According to recent reports, the Federal Government will be forced to extend the plan after threatening to destroy communities through buybacks, and the Andrews Government must fall into line for Victorian irrigators.
“The news that the Federal Government is seeking an extension to the Basin Plan is a positive change from their recent rhetoric of buybacks and hard deadlines,” Mr McCurdy said.
“The Victorian Government must now put the foot down and ensure an extension is given so that our basin communities have more time to deliver the additional environmental water without the use of buybacks.”
“The Federal Liberal and Nationals Coalition has been pushing this issue hard, and we are pleased to support their work to protect Victorians from more buybacks.”
