Nationals Member for Ovens Valley Tim McCurdy stresses that the Andrews Government’s ‘predominantly regional’ 2026 Commonwealth Games bid remains unhopeful following Labor’s decision to axe the crucial Country Roads and Bridges Program*.
Mr McCurdy said, “Before the Victorian Government proposes that regional Victoria hosts the 2026 Commonwealth Games, our regional roads and transport infrastructure needs to be up to scratch, safe and well-maintained.
“Without the crucial Country Roads and Bridges Program, the Victorian Government leaves our regional towns in limbo and unable meet the demands of a major international event.”
He continued, “Hosting the 2026 Commonwealth Games would be an amazing opportunity for the growth and development of our local communities. It would help not only restore confidence in events sectors, but ensure local jobs are rebuilt and available.
“Whether it’s beach volleyball at Cobram’s Thompson’s Beach, sailing on Lake Mulwala, or bike riding in Bright; the Ovens Valley has so much to offer – it’s time the Victorian Government gets behind our regional towns and cities and ensures hosting the 2026 Games can become a reality.”
Mr McCurdy added, “I encourage the Victorian Government to use this opportunity to listen to our regional communities and implement a positive plan for regional recovery so any bid for 2026 regional Commonwealth Games is backed with practical initiatives.”
