Peter Crisp

Member for Mildura, Peter Crisp, 60, has been in office for the past eight years getting stuff done for the Mildura electorate.

Peter is a true local, born at the Mildura Base Hospital to parents Laurence and Ida Crisp. He recalls fond memories of an early childhood living on a small, family run, dairy farm in West Merbein before moving to Dareton where he started primary school. He completed his secondary education at Mildura Technical School. Music became one of Peter’s early passions upon taking up the trombone and joining the school band, playing at various public performances across the district.

Peter’s next big move came when he left the region to further his education in Ballarat, where he studied electrical and electronic engineering, fuelled by his love for mathematics. He went on to complete a Graduate Diploma in Business Administration at the University of Ballarat.

Whilst at university Peter met and married the love of his life, MaryAnn, and took on a Residential Manager’s position at the University of Ballarat. He saw it as a great way to give back and says it was an extremely rewarding four years helping 350, mostly country students, take up opportunities for a professional career.

It wasn’t until the birth of Peter’s second child that he and wife MaryAnn made the move back to Mildura to raise their children in the country. They moved into what Peter describes as a “little fibro house” in Coomealla, to raise their three children Erinn, David and Katie.

Life soon changed yet again when Peter took over the family farms as well as the family’s small milk distribution business. He experienced the highs and lows that came with farming in the late 80’s and 90’s, i.e. high interest rates and low commodity prices. He describes those times as “difficult”, especially during “the recession we had to have”.

Out of adversity Peter’s passion for the region was ignited thrusting community life and values ahead of personal pursuits. He served as the Sunraysia Citrus Growers chairperson for many years, also serving on the Victorian Farmers Federation Horticultural Council, gaining experience and knowledge in market access, trade policy and water. Peter has also served as a board member of the Wentworth Hospital and as a Councillor at the Wentworth Shire Council, before standing aside to be elected to the Victorian Parliament, representing the seat of Mildura. He has served on the Economic Development and Infrastructure Committee since 2007. Peter’s wider interests include agriculture, horticulture, river history, aviation and engineering.
